Cover: Melissa Beckman is an artist and photographer that has had a varied career as an art director of a NBC News affiliate, a marketing specialist for transducers, fiber optics, medical and diagnostic devices, and a texture map artist and post production supervisor of first generation PlayStation games. At the various companies she worked at, she felt it was necessary to create best practices bibles and document software processes. That led to a career writing manuals which evolved into web content creation. Instagram @melissac.beckman
Call them funny, grounded, startling, erudite - they are all that and more but don’t try to measure or sum up Tom Weigel’s poems in conventional terms. You’ll get about as far as a car without wheels. Even as they traffic in the obvious they are antitheses. So “get out the toolbox/it’s time to open/a cough drop.” In this world of ‘either thugs or humbugs’ you don’t need a roadmap to get your mind around the fractured or inverted aphorisms, wise acre digs, dogged reportage and broad ranging cultural commentary in Watch That Side. What you need is an open heart. Make sure it’s in your pocketbook when you turn the first page. Here is a technical mastery so confident it’s invisible. “Nowhere quick is a very long time” indeed, comrades. Jim Cory, No Brainer Variations
