About
Monica Claire Antonie (Monica Weigel) started Accent Editions in 1980 as a small press poetry publication by producing a stapled offset printed book titled Sonnets of her brother, the poet Tom Weigel’s work. In the years that followed, Monica continued to produce books of Tom Weigel’s poetry and his haikus under the Accent Editions imprint. In tandem with the publications, Monica was taking photos of the poets at readings and events in the East Village during the 70s and 80s. The plan for many years was to produce a book called One More Beat with a collection of these photos. This finally happened in 2010 when the poet Harris Schiff collaborated with Monica as they researched her archives, scanning and selecting photos to compliment a book of Harris’ poems. The title One More Beat finally had its day. To celebrate the publication of the book, Accent Editions participated in the first One Hundred Thousand Poets for Change event on September 24th, 2011. You can view a video of the event on the Accent Editions YouTube Channel and you can view a slideshow of some of Monica's poet photos here on this site.
Tom Weigel was actively publishing books since the 1960s. His press was called Andrea Doria Books but he also produced magazines of poetry. As a teenager, Tom had a small mimeograph machine in the basement of their family home in East Northport, Long Island, NY. Here he produced Mind Inklings, Renaissance, Pierrot Poets and HomeFront. In the 1970s/80s while living in the East Village he regularly published issues of Tangerine Magazine (Vol. 1-10) including works by Ted Berrigan; Alice Notley; Harris Schiff; Maureen Owen; Jim Brodey; Charles Henri Ford; Anne Waldman; Ira Cohen; Alan Ginsberg; Gerard Malanga and many other poets that were active in the East Village at the time. The Full Deck Anthology, 1982 (reprinted in 1985) is a hefty issue with an wide range lineup of poets. Some of the books/magazines Tom published were printed on the mimeograph machine at The Poetry Project at St. Mark’s Church in New York City. When Tom moved to New London, Connecticut he started up a new press - this one titled BURP which went on to produce 10 issues as well.
